The toys
The story of Mora Play is long and filled with many key players. Mora was the surname of a family who, back in the 1940s, in a small town in Osona (Sant Pere de Torelló), began making skittles, skipping ropes, and other toys. Over the years, the small woodturning workshop became a company with a broad catalogue thanks to Rafel and Vicenç, who in the 1980s bought Casa Mora. For 40 years, they grew the business and also introduced the chess sets from Industrias del Ajedrez, a renowned company in the world of high-quality wooden chess pieces made from boxwood.
In 2019, Casa Mora became Mora Play, as we know it today — a new brand with deep roots and full of history. The current Mora Play team is young and renewed. We love the idea that the games and toys we create stir something inside you — that they invite you to jump rope again or hop onto a pair of stilts. That feeling of going back in time for a moment, of being a child again. It moves us to think this will continue generation after generation, and it amazes us even more to imagine that some of our toys will be part of those memories.
In 2023, the Mora Play family grew with the addition of two new brands: Me&Mine, a friendly brand that creates ecological, gender-neutral toys and games with beautifully designed packaging. AndLeafyMom, a small brand born in Montseny with big ideas in Montessori-style children’s furniture — take a look at their learning towers; you won’t find more beautiful and practical ones! All three brands operate independently but share countless values — the most important being love and respect for children, and a strong commitment to local manufacturing. We feel so proud to have these brands as part of our family. Long live beautiful, locally made products!

The chess
we make
Industrias del Ajedrez was a referent in the manufacturing of chess pieces. They manipulated the box wood by hand to get one of a kind and high-quality pieces. The box is a beautiful shrub from our area, that provides a strong and low porosity wood, with a unique yellowish tone, but difficult to work with in high quantities. Besides, a plague has killed off a lot of box and the quality of the wood has been affected. Box wood requires of high craftsmanship.
We still use box wood in Mora Play. Some of the pieces haven’t been changed for more than 60 years. But there are some renewed and weighted models to keep up with the requests of the current players. However, the design hasn’t changed because the pieces have a beautiful and balanced aesthetic, and exclusive to our brand. We are currently the only chess piece manufacturer in Spain and one of the few in Europe.
Take a look at our pieces: you’ll see the perfect balance between craftsmanship and quality. We know you can’t touch them through the screen, but we can assure you that they look amazing on the board.

Why we do
what we do
We don’t know for sure, but we think we do it because it’s what moves us, because we know we do something that makes children happy. We like to think that maybe one of our games is making a family or two chess lovers have a good time.
Thanks for being here and reading through this, it means that there’s still people that love memories, that love local products made with the heart. Because in fact, we have our hearts on our hands.
Anna from Mora Play
