Staunton chess pieces

High-quality Staunton chess pieces

The name “Staunton” comes from Howard Staunton (1810–1874), a renowned English chess player. After years of varied and inconsistent chess piece designs around the world, there was a need for a standard set that was easy to recognize and play with. Nathaniel Cook designed the now-famous chess pieces and named them after Staunton.

Today, Staunton pieces are the global standard used in chess tournaments and official competitions. While we craft original and unique designs in our workshop, we’re inspired by the Staunton style to create chess pieces with global appeal.

What sets our pieces apart is our fully handcrafted process—each set is made with care, precision, and materials that bring warmth and distinction far beyond mass-produced chess sets.

At Mora Play, we specialize in crafting high-quality chess pieces. It all began with Industrias del Ajedrez, which in the 1940s was already producing handcrafted boxwood chess pieces—always with its own unique designs. They created the famous Iberian Staunton, which remains the centerpiece of most national tournaments to this day. Today, we offer over 60 chess set options, allowing you to choose from a wide range of models, sizes, and colors. Furthermore, we are the only chess piece manufacturer in Europe that produces entirely on-site.
